PV central inverters are connected to many PV module arrays and are very large. Power ratings of central inverters range from 100 kW to over 10 MW. They convert direct current (DC) electricity from PV modules into 3-phase alternating current (AC) electricity.

Central inverters are mainly used in large solar power plants (also known as solar farms, solar parks or utility-scale PV systems) and are connected to medium- or high-voltage transmission networks via a transformer.
