Spaces for Knowledge Exchange & Learning
Training centres, equipped with cutting edge solar technology materials for training and learning, were established in Sulaymaniah, Baghdad and Basra. They are managed by local partners and provide the basis for the execution of the train-the-trainer programmes. The training equipment represents common types of PV applications and allow trainings on installation, operation, maintenance and inspection of grid-connected and off-grid PV systems. Part of the training equipment and showcase applications was installed on the ground and is accessible for the training participants for inspection and measurements. Another part of the training equipment, e.g. installation boards, can be used flexibly.
Services
The training centres function as venues for comprehensive trainings on installation, operation, maintenance, and inspection of solar energy systems, and as space for knowledge exchange and communication, for companies and individuals. Trainings will be provided particularly for:

Many off-grid PV systems power a single application. Examples include:
Water pumping: water supplies for people, livestock and irrigation.
Medical and vaccine cold chain refrigeration: highly efficient and low-energy DC fridges are used. Some have batteries, but others use PV-direct-drive compressors and to store cold overnight as ice, a cooled water tank or ice-lining chemicals. Refrigeration for the storage of veterinary medicines: highly efficient and low-energy DC fridges are used. These need to be approved by local authorities.
Cold storage rooms: large systems to produce crushed ice for fish processing; cold storage for vegetables and other perishable goods; and cooled milk at milk collection centres or on farms.
Electric fencing: very little power is required, so one small PV module is very often sufficient.
Portable systems: examples include portable lamps, small systems for charging mobile phones and laptops.
In principle, an off-grid PV system can be used to power any low-power application.

Training centres, equipped with cutting edge solar technology materials for training and learning, have been established in Basra, Baghdad and Sulaymaniyah for the project “Implementing capacity development for enhancing the skills and abilities of workforce for future market development of Photovoltaics in Iraq”.

PV Trainers
The PV trainers haven been trained to execute solar PV training courses to different target groups, covering the different levels of qualifications and specialisations in the solar PV field. The trainings have been implemented as part of the “Market and business development for solar power (photovoltaics) in Iraq” project. PV Trainers are individuals, freelance or employed, with a technical background, holding at least a first degree in engineering or similar. Being professionals with training experience, they decided to gain additional experience and qualification for their execution of trainings.
Qualification
Part 1 – Online Training
All PV trainers took part in an extensive online training programme, which covered 140 hours of Photovoltaic Systems Technology:
- PV Application
- PV Technology
- Small-scale PV grid-connected systems
- PV Off-Grid Systems, PV-Diesel Hybrid Systems
- Interactive e-learning elements, including virtual classrooms, assignments, and discussion forums.
Part 2 – On-site Trainings
All PV trainers started their on-site training with didactics, covering:
- The learning process,
- role of a trainer,
- verbal and non-verbal communication,
- Giving and receiving feedback,
- learning styles and types of learners,
- Planning an effective training,
- Training methods and tools for in-person trainings.
